TV shows just love to sink their teeth into a nice, juicy T-bone, don’t they?

More from TVLine

Car crashes have been a reliably dramatic plot device on the small screen for decades now, and in recent years, the most popular variety has been the surprise T-bone, or a car suddenly crashing into another car from the side. (It’s become such a cliché, in fact, that we brace ourselves for it any time a TV character is driving and being filmed from the side.) Yellowjackets and Justified: City Primeval recently reminded us that the T-bone cliffhanger is still alive and well, and it got us thinking: What are the most memorable times a TV show has put a beloved character in vehicular danger and left us dangling on the edge of our seats?

So buckle up for safety and join us as we take a drive down memory lane and look back at the most shocking car crash cliffhangers from our favorite TV shows. (You can press PLAY on most entries to watch the crash in question.) Now not all of these are strictly T-bone crashes, and some were resolved later in the same episode, but they all came out of nowhere and had us gasping for air — and anxiously waiting to find out if everyone was all right. (And sometimes, sadly, they weren’t.) Read on to see what made our list, and then park yourself in the comments and let us know any we missed.

The CW reboot knew how to keep us dangling all summer long: Season 4 ended with Dixon’s car getting smashed to bits by an oncoming truck — to the strains of fun.’s “We Are Young,” no less. (That song and Dixon’s hat make this whole scene feel very 2012.) No worries, though: He was back for the fifth and final season.

Alias

Talk about bad timing: In the Season 4 finale, just as Vaughn dropped a bombshell on Sydney that he’s not who she thinks he is (“Well, for starters, my name isn’t Michael Vaughn”), an SUV smashes into the side of the car they’re riding in. And they were just about to elope!

Arrow

Oh man, Oliver and Thea were just about to learn a big family secret from their mother Moira in Season 2 when… pow! A truck barreled into the side of their limo. It was no accident, either: It was the work of Slade, and Moira ended up sacrificing her life to save her children later in the episode.

Damages

This T-bone kicked off a season-long mystery in Season 3, with Patty’s car suddenly being struck by an unknown driver. The culprit? Patty’s own son Michael, who was angry that Patty had his girlfriend arrested.

Dawson’s Creek

Blame it on the ice cream. Dawson’s dad Mitch was driving and enjoying a delicious cone in Season 5 when the ice cream fell off. He (very stupidly) took his eyes off the road to retrieve his sweet treat… and promptly drove right into traffic. R.I.P., Mitch.

Designated Survivor

Not even a Secret Service escort could save the life of First Lady Alex Kirkman, who was killed when her car was blindsided by a truck in the Season 2 winter finale. This one had it all: a sad acoustic pop cover, Kiefer Sutherland’s character dropping his cell phone to the floor in shock… ten out of ten.

The Fosters

The drama was running high in the Season 2 finale as Mariana and Jesus were riding in the car with their birth mother Ana, who was going into labor — when an SUV slammed right into them. In an extra poignant twist, Mariana’s adopted mom Stef was the cop who responded to the accident. Everyone survived… but Jake T. Austin, who played Jesus, left the cast and was replaced by Noah Centineo.

Glee

Quinn learned the perils of texting and driving the hard way in Season 3’s winter finale: She was running late to Rachel and Finn’s wedding, and as she glanced down to text Rachel back (on her BlackBerry!), she was viciously T-boned by a truck. We had to wait two months to find out if Quinn was alive — which she was, although in a wheelchair, which gave her a chance to bond with Artie.

Grey’s Anatomy

ABC’s hit medical drama served up quite a few car crashes over the years — it’s about to hit the 20-season mark, after all — but the most devastating had to be the death of Derek, aka “McDreamy,” in Season 11. Derek had just finished helping the victims of an accident when he got back into his car… and got smacked by a truck.

Homeland

Carrie’s Season 2 pursuit of terrorist Abu Nazir took a sharp turn when she was fiddling with her car radio — to put on jazz, of course — and got smashed into by a white van. It was a deliberate hit, too: When Carrie regained consciousness, she was being held hostage by Nazir and his henchmen.

Knots Landing

Leave it to the primetime soaps to pioneer a new storytelling twist: Four decades ago now, this classic CBS sudser sent nice-guy used car dealer Sid careening off a cliff in the Season 2 finale after his brakes were tampered with. They actually went through with killing Sid off, too, a couple episodes into Season 3.

Law & Order

Jill Hennessy’s Season 6 departure from the NBC drama led to this shocker, with Hennessy’s assistant D.A. character Claire Kincaid offering to drive a drunk Briscoe home and then getting hit by another drunk driver — a crash that proved to be fatal. (Scroll ahead to the 10:22 mark.)

Lucifer

Chloe got caught in the middle of a demonic family spat in Season 2 when she was innocently driving along and a car smashed into hers from the side. Turns out the crash was a message from Lucifer’s brother Uriel.

Nashville

Poor Rayna James. In Season 5, she had just escaped the clutches of a deranged stalker when the police cruiser she was riding in got the T-bone treatment, leading to her demise a week later. She never could catch a break, could she?

One Tree Hill

See, this is why you don’t drive a limousine on a narrow country bridge. Season 3 ended with Rachel and Cooper’s limo taking a dramatic tumble off a bridge, with the two sinking to the bottom of a river. A newly married Nathan dove in to save them, only to get trapped under water himself (!). Don’t worry, though: They all resurfaced in Season 4.

Parenthood

Amber was out of control in Season 2, drinking and smoking weed with her bad-boy boyfriend Gary, and she got a rude awakening when she and Gary got into a horrific wreck that totaled his car. Zeek had to give her a strong dose of tough love to get her back on track — and we cried, of course.

Supernatural

Not the Impala! The CW drama’s freshman season ended with Sam driving a badly injured Dean and their dad John to the hospital… when they got crushed by a huge semi truck driven by a black-eyed demon. The beloved car known as “Baby” lived on, though, and so did the Winchester boys — for another 14 seasons, in fact.

Yellowjackets

These sudden car crashes have a way of interrupting tough conversations, like when Taissa was being confronted by her wife Simone about getting help for her sleepwalking alter ego in Season 2. That alter ego seemed to take over as Taissa fixed Simone with an intense stare and ran a red light — and their Range Rover got smashed up by a pickup truck.
