Following in the footsteps of the Muppets and Jason Voorhees, it’s now the walking dead’s turn to take Manhattan in AMC’s latest spin-off, the six-episode first season of “The Walking Dead: Dead City” (now streaming on AMC+; 9 p.m. Sunday on linear AMC).
McCandless native Greg Nicotero, a “TWD” mainstay, gets a consulting producer credit on this zombie-filled spin-off but Nicotero has been less involved in this series as he’s overseeing the Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) spin-off that filmed in France.
“Dead City” follows previously bitter enemies Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) to NYC. Given Maggie’s hatred of Negan – he murdered Maggie’s husband, Glenn (Steven Yuen), in the seventh season of the original “TWD” — how can these two possibly be a team?
Maggie needs Negan to help rescue her son, Herschel (Logan Kim), who’s been captured in Manhattan by the Croat (Željko Ivanek), a former Negan associate.
“Dead City” takes pains to make Maggie’s turn to Negan at least semi-believable. In a conversation in the season premiere, Negan says he’s no more a “bad guy” than anyone else, saying to Maggie, “Ask yourself one question: How many husbands and fathers have you killed?”
Star Jeffrey Dean Morgan understands if fans are skeptical of the show’s premise. He was, too, at first.
“I live in New York and so I walk down those streets, and the people that are there remind me daily that Glenn was their favorite character,” he said in January at a press conference during AMC’s portion of the Television Critics Association winter 2023 press tour. “Having said that, though, the journey that Negan’s been on and where he finds himself now in ‘Dead City’ is a faraway place from where we first met him.”
“Dead City” shows a Negan who reclaims his cruelty in episode two with a vicious, gory slaughter. And this new series embraces an urban setting instead of the original show’s mostly rural locations. “Dead City” also has a much smaller cast.
“We had more than 20 series regulars by the end [of ‘The Walking Dead’],” said “TWD” universe executive producer Scott Gimple during January’s TCA. “This show is very focused on Maggie and Negan and then the few other characters that were bringing in. There arent a ton of other characters, and we get to tell their stories deeply.”
In addition, Gimple said, “what happened to New York [in the zombie apocalypse] is not what happened to Georgia and Virginia. It is a different civilization. The tone of the story is a little different. The visuals are different.”
W. Pa. native on ‘Big Freedia’
Erica Altmiller, a 2001 South Allegheny High School grad who works as a psychic medium, appears on reality show “Big Freedia Means Business” (9 p.m. June 28, Fuse, Fuse+, WOW Presents Plus streaming service) and brings the show’s star to tears.
Altmiller grew up near McKeesport in Liberty Burrough and first sensed she might be a medium at age 7 when her late great-grandmother “started coming to me as a kid in a physical form.”
Altmiller never pursued what she describes as her “gift” until 2015 when she started traveling to body-mind-spirit expos. A 2006 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she studied hospitality management, Altmiller moved to Los Angeles in 2019 where she’s a server at The Abbey in West Hollywood – she was leaving the night some of the key events in the “Scandoval” of “Vanderpump Rules” ocurred. Altmiller also offers readings for personalities including former “Real Housewives of Miami” star Lea Black, celebrity medium Kim Russo (“The Haunting Of…”) and celebrity hairstylist Chaz Dean.
Altmiller said she got a call in December 2022 and was asked to do a filmed reading for a celebrity but she went in not knowing who it would be.
Big Freedia, a gay rapper and performer who embraces his feminine side and uses any and all pronouns, was seeking “clarification on some things about any of her business ventures she is pursuing,” Altmiller said. “Keep in mind, she’s a huge skeptic at the same time. Most people that I read for are skeptics. Everyones skeptical of something, so I totally get that.”
Altmiller can’t talk about the reading itself but in the show’s trailer Altmiller says she’s “channeling an Anthony of some sort.”
“That’s my brother,” Big Freedia replies, tearing up. “His name is Adam Anthony.”
Altmiller said she hopes to do more psychic readings for celebrities on TV in the future.
