Game notes: The Tigers were able to miraculously grab the first game of the series with the Rangers on Monday after losing Matthew Boyd to an arm injury in the first inning and reliever Will Vest to a knee injury in the second. It must be something about playing the Rangers.
Over the course of their first series of the season a month ago, the Tigers lost outfielder Matt Vierling, starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez and center fielder Riley Greene. But like many things in life, injuries go in cycles. And after Matt Manning returned to the mound on Tuesday, Tigers fans will certainly hope things are swinging back in the right direction and the team can just play baseball.
As the Tigers fight to pick up wins to stay in the race for the AL Central (despite being multiple games under .500) they will have lefty Joey Wentz on the mound, whose dreadful 1-8 record is a pretty fair reflection of how he's pitched so far this year, which even he would tell you hasn't lived up to his expectations for himself.
Although he allowed four runs in his last outing, things have settled down a bit for Wentz lately. He allowed 22 runs over six outings in the month of May, including games where he was chased out before the third inning in back-to-back starts.
On June 11 in a matchup with the Arizona Diamondbacks, A.J. Hinch, never afraid of an experiment, decided to use Wentz in a long relief role with an opener kicking things off. Hinch simply wanted to break the cycle and give Wentz a different look. It worked, as Wentz gave up just one hit over four innings. Wentz has since returned to the starter role in his last two appearances. He faired well against the Minnesota Twins on June 17, allowing two hits and two runs over six innings, before struggling a bit when the Twins saw him again just a few days later.
Although the Rangers are one of the best offenses in the league, Wentz will probably not be too upset to see them on the schedule. When he faced the Rangers back in May, he allowed just one run, albeit on seven hits. He'll need some of that run-stranding magic once again on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Tigers will be facing one of the best pitchers in baseball this season. Dane Dunning, standing 6 feet 4, has a measly 2.76 ERA in 17 starts this season. It's not surprising that it has translated to wins, as he's posted a 6-1 record so far this year.
Dunning's ERA has made a marked improvement this year after posting a 4.46 ERA in 2022 and 4.51 in 2021. He's also allowed just four home runs so far this year and has improved his efficiency, dropping his pitches per innings pitched from 16.62 to 15.29.
Despite this being the best year of his career so far, his strikeouts per nine innings (K/9) have oddly dropped pretty drastically this year. He's never averaged less than eight K/9 in his career, but he's averaging 5.15 K/9 in 2023. He's making up for that by reducing his walk rate and having a much lower batting average on balls in play, typically a sign of weaker contact.
It should be an interesting challenge for Wentz and the Tigers as they try and grab Game 3 of this series.
