The community is invited to enjoy favorites from cinema and more at the Sequim City Band’s “Movies, Musicals, and Marches” concert, set for 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at the bandshell at the James Center for Performing Arts, 350 N. Blake Ave.
The concert and on-site parking are free, and dogs are invited as audience members. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and a wide-brimmed hat or umbrella and spend the afternoon with toe tapping music from stage and screen performed by Sequim community band — a tradition since 1992.
The arrangement of pieces from “Les Misérables” by Warren Barker for concert band includes “At the End of the Day,” “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Master of the House,” “On My Own, and “Do You Hear the People Sing?”
Under the direction of Tyler Benedict, The Sequim City Band will also play a medley from “The King and I,” including such favorites as “Getting to Know You” and “Shall We Dance.”
The band will lead the audience in small-town life from 110 years ago with “76 Trombones,” a medley of songs from “The Music Man,” set in 1912; the 1957 Broadway hit features the songs of Iowan Meredith Willson.
Musical selections from Star Trek will transport the audience to the futuristic far-off reaches of space. This medley includes music from composer Michael Giacchino, who was contracted to breathe new life into the franchise through the soundtracks for the “Star Trek” and “Star Trek Into Darkness” movies. In addition to original music, he includes an altered arrangement of the TV series original theme, “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”
For the young at heart there will be selections from the 2021 computer-animated musical fantasy comedy “Encanto,” including the viral sensation “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” The medley includes eight songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Also on the musical menu is John Williams’ “Midway March,” from the WWII-era movie “Midway.”
A couple of different styles of marches will include the vintage ragtime/Dixieland-style march: “Broadway One-Step” by Karl King, and a contemporary march “Cluster, Fluster, Bluster March” that is a musical riot featuring dissonant notes, trombone smears and amusing percussion effects.
Note: A previously announced 1:45 p.m. performance by Olympic Express Big Band has been canceled due to health concerns.
The Sequim City Band’s final concert of the 2022 “Concerts at the James” summer season is set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, when the will help KSQM 91.5 FM celebrate Pet Lovers’ Day with a concert featuring music all about pets and other animals.
