2022 is almost here and with it comes new movie releases. With productions starting back up in 2021, there are a lot of exciting cinematic prospects on the way and some of them have been on the cards for a while. January has some movies that have had their releases delayed multiple times, some that have been planned productions for some times, and others that have come out of nowhere.
Historically, January isn't a month that sees many huge releases with only one or two big-name movies traditionally coming out. Past years' big releases have been Promising Young Woman, Bad Boys for Life, and Escape Room. While January isn't exactly blockbuster season, this year has some interesting prospects both original and based on existing properties. Here is a look at the biggest January 2022 releases.
Deriving its title from Agent 355 a female spy for the Patriots during the American Revolution, The 355 sees an all-female team of spies from across the world band together to recover a top-secret weapon. Directed by Simon Kinberg and starring Jessica Chastain, Lupita N'yongo, Diane Kruger, Penelope Cruz, and Bingbing Fan, the premise for the movie was actually pitched to Kinberg by Chastain whilst they made Dark Phoenix together.
Originally slated for a January 15th, 2021 release, The 355 looks like a more serious take on the female spy film as opposed to movies like Charlie's Angels or Spy.
Taking place 25 years after the events of the first film, Scream gets the old cast back together in Woodsboro to take on a new masked killer. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courtney Cox, and Roger L. Jackson return to reprise their original roles. Rounding out the cast are Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, and Jack Quaid, Woodsboro's new crew of teenage targets.
Touted as a reboot, Scream seems to be more of a mix of sequel and torch-passing as Melissa Barrera's character Sam becomes the target of the new Ghostface and seeks out help from Dewey, drawing the original cast members back to Woodsboro to once again confront the killer. It also appears that Ghostface has a shiny new look and it will be interesting to see where that originates from.
Belle was first released in July 2021 in Japan but is receiving its North American release in January. Revolving around Suzu Naito, Belle follows her as she creates an online avatar in an online platform called U, that becomes a singing sensation, performing virtual concerts and gaining popularity across the world.
During one of her concerts, a Dragon avatar appears setting off a chain of events that lead Suzu to scour the world of U to discover the identity of the Dragon before a rogue group of users do. Belle is a beautifully animated film that deals with grief, abuse, and finding yourself and hopefully, it can find the fans it deserves in the West.
Starring Pierce Brosnan as King Louis XIV and directed by Sean McNamara, The King's Daughter is the story of King Louis' quest for immortality and his plan to steal the lifeforce of a mermaid, played by Bingbing Fan. Things get complicated when the King's hidden and illegitimate daughter Marie-Jospèhe, played by Kaya Scodelario, discovers the mermaid and his intentions. What follows is a fight between Marie-Jospèhe and her father to save the mermaid.
From the looks of the trailer, Scodelario will also be going up against Brosnan's interesting choice of accent. The King's Daughter has the potential to be a great fantasy romance or an over-the-top flop.
Finally seeing its release in January 2022 is the long-awaited Marvel movie starring Jared Leto Morbius. In the comics, the character of Morbius is known as The Living Vampire, after a failed bio-chemical experiment to cure a rare blood disease backfired and bestowed him with vampiric abilities. As for the big-screen version, it seems to be following much the same storyline, with the trailer showing Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, a frail and dying man transformed after his experiments with bats.
With the release of Morbius, Marvel sees another entry into the more horror-tinged stories from the comics, joining Doctor Strange and The Multiverse of Madness and the upcoming Blade reboot. The potential for Morbius to appear in other Marvel properties is exciting, with Leto hinting at sinister potential crossovers into the Spider-verse and the possibility of igniting the character's famed rivalry with Blade. The most recent trailer even gave a look at Morbius meeting Michael Keaton's Vulture, who is playing some kind of larger role in the MCU villain-verse with hints at the bringing together of The Sinister Six rife among fans.
