1. Forrest Gump

The movie that won Tom Hanks his second Oscar holds acclaim that is indelible and unassailable. The movie tells the story of the titular character, and the adventures and glories that life thrusts upon him. 

2. Phantom Thread

This critically acclaimed movie from the brilliant mind of Paul Thomas Anderson was a favorite at the Oscars in 2018. Daniel Day-Lewis in his final film role portrays an haute couture dressmaker in 1950s London. Things become even better when he takes a young waitress as his muse. But things get derailed when his muse becomes his lover. 

3. Sleepless in Seattle

One of the immortal names in rom-com genre, this movie was the second collaboration between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. A Chicago widower, Sam Baldwin (Hanks), moves to Seattle with his little son to start a new life after losing his wife to cancer. Due to his son's proactiveness and fate's plans, he finds himself on a new path of love. The sweetest and most emotional scene of the movie comes when grieving Sam Baldwin imagines a New Year's Eve conversation with his deceased wife.

4. Entrapment

A master thief (Sean Connery) is joined by an up-and-coming thief (Catherine Zeta-Jones) to pull off a daring heist — but all is not what seems to be. The movie's plot may remind you of Charade or To Catch A Thief, and the action sequences of James Bond movies which honestly makes for an enjoyable watch.

5. New Year's Eve

This star-heavy rom-com is about several New Yorkers whose lives are intertwined with each other on New Year's Eve. A story about "love, hope, forgiveness, second chances and fresh starts, in intertwining stories told amidst the pulse and promise of New York City on the most dazzling night of the year."  

6. A Lot Like Love

The handsome pair of Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet will certainly brighten your New Year's Eve. Netflix gives an intriguing summary: Though sparks fly between Oliver and Emily on a long flight, they agree they'd be a terrible match. But over the next seven years, fate takes a hand.

7. About A Boy

Hugh Grant stars as a rich but irresponsible man-child in his thirties who pretends to be a single father in order to romance single mothers. One such encounter introduces him to a 12-year-old boy (Nicholas Hoult) who teaches him about fatherhood and later at a New Year's dinner party, he meets Rachel (Rachel Weisz), a single mom, who falls for him because she thinks he is a single dad.

In the 1950s, a wealthy suburban housewife (Cate Blanchett) and a young department store shopgirl (Rooney Mara) embark on a passionate, forbidden romance that will forever change their lives and of the people close to them.

If you get weary of watching too many rom-coms, here's a survival thriller. "A tidal wave spells disaster for a ship of New Year's Eve revellers when it capsizes the mammoth vessel, sending passengers into a battle for survival."

This modern take on Jane Austen's classic, Pride and Prejudice, sees two men vying for a single lady instead of the other way round as seen in the original book. Soon she finds herself at the center of attention between two handsome guys (played by Hugh Grant and Colin Firth).

A rom-com that has now become a classic also immortalized the New Year’s Eve midnight kiss. Watch this to enjoy the crackling chemistry and sexual tension between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, the humorous and adorable story, and for the most iconic scene from the Katz Deli.

This time travel rom-com can be best summarised as: The night after another unsatisfactory New Year's party, Tim's father (Bill Nighy) tells his son that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Tim can't change history, but he can change what happens and has happened in his own life — so he decides to make his world a better place... by getting a girlfriend.

13. While You Were Sleeping

Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman star in this rom-com triggered by an averted tragedy and a misunderstanding. When Lucy rescues her longtime crush from being crushed by an oncoming train, his family assumes her to be his fiancée. Forest Whitaker's directorial debut brings us the dazzling duo of Angela Bassett and Whitney Houston in a romance film based on a 1992 novel of the same name. The story is about 4 women living in Phoenix, Arizona and their relationships with each other and their efforts to find true love.

This is the second movie on this list by Paul Thomas Anderson. A comedy-drama set in 1970s Los Angeles chronicles the Golden Age of Porn. Mark Wahlberg stars as Dirk Diggler, a male pornstar directly inspired by famous porn actor John Holmes.

18. Snowpiercer

The only thing that you need to know about this movie is that it is directed by Bong Joon-ho whose brilliant mind gave us Okja, Memories of Murder, and the pièce de résistance, Parasite. The movie is a post-apocalyptic action film set on a train, called Snowpiercer, that is running relentlessly on a globe-spanning track. What will happen when the poor folks on the train rebel against the rich folks on the train?

19. The Age of Adaline

21. Survivor

This spy action thriller sees Pierce Brosnan clashing with Milla Jovovich in a cat and mouse game. In a role reversal, Brosnan stars as a most wanted hitman known as the Watchmaker who plans to detonate a bomb at Times Square in New York City during New Year's Eve celebrations. It's up to the DSS agent Kate Abbott (Jovovich) to save the day (year?).
