The Texas Longhorns successfully bounced back from the blowout loss in Fayetteville to the Arkansas Razorbacks, but now a significant challenge awaits in Fort Worth — erasing the struggles of the last decade against the TCU Horned Frogs with a rare win against TCU head coach Gary Patterson.
The Horned Frogs have often struggled the week before facing the Longhorns — and the week after — but currently boast a 7-2 record against Texas since joining the Big 12. In Fort Worth, the Horns won a game since a blowout win in 2013.
So it’s up to new head coach Steve Sarkisian and his surging offense led by junior quarterback Casey Thompson to reverse those trends against a TCU defense that looks unusually vulnerable.
Kyle — Since coming back to the college ranks from the Falcons, Sark has won 27 of 30 games, and his offenses still put up 500 yards in two of those three losses (Joe Burrow’s LSU, a crazy Iron Bowl, and...Arkansas. Guess which one is the deviation?) If the weather, the execution, the OL, and some crazy Patterson scheme don’t stand in the way, Sark’s offense should give Texas enough room to breathe 38 - 28.
What would I like to see them do? Let Zach EAT, maximize Duggan’s skills by using the intermediate passing game and the middle of the field, and take the occasional early-down shot over the top to stretch the defense with Quentin Johnston and Savion Williams. Taye Barber and JD Spielman have proven that they can turn short passes into big gains, so follow the NFL model and use the passing game as an extension of the running game when teams stack the box to stop Evans.
