Let's go to the movies - Daily Mountain Eagle

maleomales.blogspot.com

So let's ignore the fact that I own stock in AMC and am currently waiting to get to the moon. And while we ignore that, let's say that I am utterly stoked for the summer movie season after the nightmarish year that was 2020.

Streaming services have almost completely taken over the world, especially during a pandemic that forced so many around the world to sit at home for hours on end. Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock and so many others have all but replaced cable tv. But while they may try, nothing will ever be able to compete with the feeling of sitting in a packed theater on opening night of a major blockbuster film.

I'm immediately drawn back to 'Avengers: Endgame,' the last movie I saw in theaters. There is something wonderfully weird about cheering for a screen with a couple hundred equally passionate fans. But since Marvel Studios' Infinity Saga-ending spectacular, my nerdy little heart has ached for something new. Yes, I loved 'Kong vs Godzilla' on HBO Max. 'Wandavision,' 'Falcon and the Winter Soldier,' and now 'Loki' are all amazing entries into the MCU on Disney+. But despite how good those are, it's just not the same as a theater experience.

Finally, 2021 will see the return of movie blockbusters to theaters. Let's take a look at some of the ones I am most looking forward to.

F9 (Fast and Furious 9) – Friday June 25

Fast cars, explosions and literal physics-defying action. These movies are so cliched and terrible that they're amazing. Former WWE Champion John Cena joins in the fun this time as he joins the Fast and Furious cast for the ninth installment of the over-the-top franchise. This just screams IMAX 3D.

Black Widow – Friday July 9

Originally scheduled for a May 2020 release date, 'Black Widow' takes place chronologically before the title character's death in 'Endgame' and is poised to be Scarlett Johanson's final venture into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's been so long since we've had a new Marvel movie that I'd be there opening night no matter what it is. So it's just a massive bonus that I'm legitimately excited to see the film.

Space Jam: A New Legacy - Friday July 16

Let's face it, nothing will ever top Michael Jordan teaming with Bugs Bunny, but it's still Space Jam and I will still be watching it. This one will be on HBO Max on release day, but seems more like the perfect chance to get my kids back into the theater for a fun family movie.

The Suicide Squad – Friday August 6

I'm still not entirely sure if this is a hard reboot, a soft reboot or a sequel. Either way, with 'Guardians of the Galaxy' director James Gunn at the helm, I can't help but think this will be a massive improvement over the first film. Plus, Margo Robbie is back as the ever-complex Harley Quinn and that's never a bad thing.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage – September 24

Sony and Disney's relationship over the Spider-Man franchise is aptly labeled as “it's complicated.” Venom without Spider-Man is a weird scenario for those that are familiar with the comic book history of the two. However, these unlikely studio bedfellows have seemingly made peace for the time being. Rumors are abound that we may get the red-clad web-slinger in this sequel.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife - November 11

This is the proper continuation of the original, universally beloved two films. Now, don't get me wrong, I am one of the seemingly few that enjoyed the all-female reboot a couple years ago, but there is something entirely different and special about the original cast carrying the original story forward. Count me in!

Spider-Man: No Way Home – December 17

I don't even know what to think of this. Put down the paper you're reading/open a new tab on your screen and do a Google search of “Spider-Man No Way Home rumors.” Go ahead, I'll wait. Okay, so this is either going to be really good or really terrible. But, coming from Marvel, who seemingly can do not wrong, I'm going with really good.

__

Frankly, I'm excited about even more but I have to be conscious of the fact that there is only so much room within the pages of the Daily Mountain Eagle. With that said, this could be the biggest year for cinema in a very long time.

See you at the movies.
