Movie theaters are continuing their COVID claw-back.
In the metro area, 22 theaters announced Friday that they were showing movies this weekend, days after Gov. Tim Walz said they could re-open.
But nine remain closed, with no announced plans to show movies again.
East-metro theaters remaining dark include the Grandview in St. Paul, Marcus Theaters in Hastings, the Plaza in Maplewood and the Alamo Drafthouse in Woodbury.
Other closed theaters are CMX Cinemas Market at Mall of America, Edina Cinema, and the Uptown and Riverview theaters in Minneapolis. The New Visions Theatres Oakdale 20 closed – permanently — last spring because of the COVID pandemic.
The first shut-down order from Gov. Walz came March 27, as the disease spread across the state. Walz ordered theaters to be closed, along with restaurants, bars and fitness centers. The theaters were then allowed to re-open, until Walz gave a similar shut-down order in December.
The tally of unopened theaters is actually an improvement since August, when about half of the metro-area theaters were closed.
Industry experts predict that many theaters will go out of business permanently. CNBC reported that ticket sales in the U.S. dropped 80 percent in 2020. All 536 Regal theaters in the U.S. have closed.
Theaters are getting clobbered by Hollywood releasing movies to streaming services and theaters at the same time.
The latest studio making that move is Warner Brothers, which announced in December it would release all 2021 movies on-line and in theaters simultaneously. Those movies include Dune, Matrix 4 and Godzilla vs. Kong.
