For some of us, staying home to celebrate New Year’s Eve is a time-honored tradition. In 2020, we’re all being advised to stick to the couch to ring in the new year, as a means to avoid crowds and slow the spread of the coronavirus. As usual, TV is here to offer New Year’s Eve specials. In 2020, watching Ryan Seacrest, Anderson Cooper, Hoda Kotb and more will be the closest thing to a communal new year’s experience we’re likely to get.
The coverage from New York City’s Times Square is likely to look significantly different this year. Instead of the huge crowds who usually whoop it up and wait for the Waterford Crystal New Year’s Eve Ball to drop at midnight, the celebration will be closed to the public, and mainly consist of performers and some essential workers.
But the ball is still scheduled to drop, and the confetti is supposed to fly. Here’s how TV will be marking the end of this most difficult of years, and welcoming in 2021.
“New Year’s Eve Live With Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen”: For early-to-bed West Coast viewers, the CNN live coverage offers an opportunity to watch the ball drop at 9 p.m. Pacific Time. This year, Cooper and Cohen will still be on duty at Times Square. And CNN will have Ana Cabrera, Stephanie Elam, Randi Kaye, Richard Quest, Gary Tuchman, and Bill Weir reporting from locations around the world, although whether they’ll be surrounded by the usual convivial crowds seems less than likely. The program is also scheduled to include appearances and performances by John Mayer, Snoop Dogg, Patti Labelle, Jimmy Buffett, Carole Baskin (really?), Josh Groban, Leslie Jordan, Dulce Sloan, Desus & Mero, Kylie Minogue, Aloe Blacc, Goo Goo Dolls and Jon Bon Jovi.
Also expect tributes to health care and other essential workers, as well as acknowledgment of the year’s grave events, from lives lost to economic suffering. (Coverage begins at 5 p.m. p.m. PT and continues until 9:30 p.m. PT; on the East Coast, coverage begins at 8 p.m. on CNN; The CNN live stream will be available on CNN.com’s homepage)
“Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2021″: Ryan Seacrest will host the annual extravaganza from Times Square, joined by Lucy Hale and Billy Porter. Ciara will once again host the Los Angeles celebration. Performers include Jennifer Lopez, Cyndi Lauper, Jimmie Allen, Nelly, Miley Cyrus, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Maluma, En Vogue, Ella Mai, Lewis Capaldi, Brandy and more. President-elect Joe Biden and future First Lady Jill Biden will also appear in an interview with Seacrest. (The show begins at 8 p.m. and takes a break at 11 p.m. for local news, resuming at 11:30 p.m., and scheduled to continue until about 2 a.m. on ABC; stream on FuboTV and on Hulu + Live TV)
“Fox’s New Year’s Eve Toast & Roast 2021″: Joel McHale and Ken Jeong, who worked together on the much-loved comedy, “Community,” host a special featuring musical performances and celebrity guests. McHale and Jeong will be in Los Angeles, and Kelly Osbourne will report from Times Square. Craig Robinson and The Nasty Delicious will be the house band. Other guests include Carole Baskin (her again?), Dionne Warwick, Ice-T and Coco, LeAnn Rimes, Gloria Estefan, Doctor Elvis, Cheyenne Jackson, Jane Krakowski, Leslie Jordan, Mayim Bialik, Morris Chestnut, Randy Jackson, Tim Allen and Tom Payne. Also scheduled are iHeartRadio musical performances by John Legend, Green Day, Ava Max and Gabby Barrett. (Part One of the “Toast & Roast” airs from 8-10 p.m.; Part Two airs from 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on Fox; stream on FuboTV and on Hulu + Live TV)
“New Year’s Eve: Escape From 2020″: Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager switch from their “Today” show duties to host a look at the most buzzed-about videos and trends of the year. Also on tap are some of the “most inspirational moments of 2020,” and celebrities talking about what they hope will come in 2021. (8-10 p.m. NBC)
“Pink Martini Celebrates New Year’s Eve”: In ordinary years, the Portland-based Pink Martini performs to enthusiastic live audiences on New Year’s Eve. In 2020, the band is partnering with OPB for a virtual concert, titled “Good Riddance 2020.” Presented by Classic Pianos, Stoller Family Estate and Metropolitan Youth Symphony, the hour-long show is filmed at Pink Martini headquarters, in downtown Portland, with a 35-foot Christmas tree on hand to add holiday spirit. Bandleader Thomas Lauderdale will be at his customary spot at the piano, with China Forbes handling lead singer duties. Guests include co-lead singer Storm Large, Ari Shapiro (of NPR fame), Edna Vazquez, Jimmie Herrod, Sofia von Trapp and Cantor Ida Rae Cahana. (9:30-10:30 p.m. OPB)
“NBC’s New Year’s Eve 2021″: Carson Daly, Amber Ruffin and Stephen “tWitch” Boss host from Times Square. The evening is scheduled to include performances from across the country by artists including AJR, Busta Rhymes featuring Anderson .Paak, Chloe x Halle, CNCO, Jason Derulo, Goo Goo Dolls, Kylie Minogue, Pentatonix, Bebe Rexha featuring Doja Cat, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani and Sting featuring Shirazee. (The show begins at 10 p.m., takes a break at 11 p.m. for local news, then returns at 11:30 p.m. and is scheduled to continue until 12:30 a.m. on NBC; stream on FuboTV)
