Even in a strange holiday season, the 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will continue, though, as with so many rituals, this one will look different. Because of safety protocols put in place to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The 94th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is being staged as “a reimagined celebration,” as NBC says.
What that means is that, unlike in years past, the parade won’t proceed down the streets of New York City, with crowds gathered to watch and cheer. Instead, as NBC says, the production “will shift to a broadcast-only event.” Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb and Al Roker of the “Today” show are expected to host the live broadcast of the parade.
The TV special version of the parade will be held in front of Macy’s flagship store, on 34th Street in New York City. The parade will present the balloons, floats, performances, and the climactic arrival of Santa Claus that viewers have come to know.
This year’s parade festivities will be opened by “Tonight Show” stars Jimmy Fallon and The Roots. Guests also include Lauren Alaina, Sofia Carson, Patti LaBelle, Matthew Morrison, “Sesame Street” Muppets, Leslie Odom Jr., Keke Palmer, Bebe Rexha, Jordin Sparks and more, wit a special appearance by Dolly Parton.
As usual, cast members of stage musicals will be on hand, with performances scheduled from the casts of “Ain’t Too Proud -- The Life and Times of the Temptations,” “Hamilton,” “Jagged Little Pill” and “Mean Girls.” And The Rockettes will also be on hand for a high-kicking number, among other highlights.
