Looking to upgrade your television this holiday season? Here are the best options to consider. From OLED, QLED and LED — these televisions offer the best viewing experience in terms of brightness, contrast-ratio, clarity and performance.
And with Black Friday and Cyber Monday just around the corner, now is the time to make that switch over to a new television set.
OLED TVs offer the best possible picture you can find on television sets today, and come at a steeper price as a result. OLED, which stands for organic light-emitting diode, is able to create contrast ratios other television display are not. According to CNET, “OLED can produce a perfect black, emitting no light whatsoever, its contrast ratio (expressed as the brightest white divided by the darkest black) is technically infinite. And contrast ratio is arguably the most important aspect of picture quality.”
The best OLED offering in 2020 is the LG CX Series OLED TV.
This 4k UHD is consistently ranked across tech sites as the premier OLED TV choice, with RTINGS.com giving it an 8.8 rating for mixed usage. The TV delivers incredible picture quality, and is the best TV they’ve tested, the site says.
“The LG CX OLED is an excellent TV for most uses. Like any OLED TV, it can produce perfect blacks and has a near-instant response time. It also has FreeSync support and G-SYNC compatibility to reduce screen tearing when gaming. Unfortunately, it has a risk of permanent burn-in, but this shouldn’t be an issue with varied content. It’s great for watching shows during the day as it has outstanding reflection handling and wide viewing angles,” RTINGs.com writes.
This TV is a great option for gaming, especially the new next generation gaming consoles including the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X, as it offers HDMI 2.1 inputs which allows users to game in 4k with a 120Hz refresh rate for a super smooth experience.
The LG CX comes in a range of sizes including 48″, 55″ 65″ and 77″. The 55″ is currently $300 off for $1,399.99 on BestBuy.com right now.
Sony, another household name in home entertainment, offers some great OLED TV options as well including the new A8H OLED.
According to TechRadar, the TV is perfect for home cinema fans.
“By combining Sony’s premium OLED picture performance with a powerful and direct sound system, the Sony A8H OLED TV manages to be a stunningly compelling TV option for serious home cinema fans,” the website writes.
While the TV offers 4K HDR, it cannot output a 4K/120Hz refresh rate for ultimate performance during next generation gaming on the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X.
“The sharpness and detail of native 4K images is otherwise fantastic. Classic fine details such as skin pores, woodland leaves, distant brickwork and lichen-covered, crag-filled mountains are all impeccably rendered. What’s more, the extreme sharpness is achieved without common sharpness-related artefacts such as ghosty, stressy object edges, exaggerated source noise, or exaggerated grain,” TechRadar writes.
The 55″ of the TV is available on Amazon for $1,498.
In between OLED and LED is QLED, which stands for Quantum Light Emitting Diode. The main difference is that QLED uses quantum “dots” to emit brightness and color. According to DigitalTrends, “The technology was introduced by Sony in 2013, but shortly after that, Samsung began selling its QLED TVs and established a licensing partnership with other manufacturers, which is why you’ll now find QLED TVs from Sony, Vizio, Hisense, and TCL.”
A great budget friendly QLED option is TCL’s 6-Series QLED with MiniLED. TechRadar gives the TV a 4.5 star rating out of 5 and says, “The inclusion of MiniLED technology boosts contrast of the 6-Series and the AiPQ Engine does a great job upscaling HD video. Motion handling still isn’t flawless and it’s not the brightest LED-LCD TV, but overall it’s a great value.”
The TV won’t offer 4K/120Hz for silky smooth next generation gaming, but will handle casual streaming of Netflix and other services just fine.
You can purchase the TCL 55″ 6-Series 4K UHD Dolby Vision HDR QLED ROKU Smart TV on Amazon for $649.99.
Another strong option from LG is the NanoCell 85 4K TV. This TV is the most affordable 4K TV with HDMI 2.1 that you can find. That means it is able to boast a 4K display with a 120Hz refresh rate — perfect for the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles. The TV won’t offer the same contrast-ration some of the earlier mentioned premium sets will, but is a decent choice as far as mixed usage goes.
“It performs best as a gaming TV or as a PC monitor thanks to its low input lag and good response time. It’s not the best choice for watching movies in a dark room since it has a low contrast ratio, poor black uniformity, and a bad local dimming feature. Luckily with its IPS panel, it has wide viewing angles if you want to watch a show or the big game with a big group of people,” writes RTINGS.com
The TV is currently on sale with with some serious Black Friday discounts. The 55″ set is now selling for just under $700 on Amazon.
