How to watch the Marvel movies in order – 'Spaghetti Order'

Spoiler alert: in here, the traditional film order is about to be subverted. You may wonder why is it called Spaghetti? This order does not have any innate link to the narrative nuances of Italian filmmaking, à la Spaghetti Western. The Spaghetti Order follows sound and simple reasoning: basically, if a post-credit scene alludes to another film, the thinking is that you should watch that film next, if possible. That's it!

So if you are looking to go a little more offbeat with your Marvel movie marathon, here is how that ordering breaks down:

1. Iron Man (2008)
2. The Incredible Hulk (2008)
3. Iron Man 2 (2010)
4. Thor (2011)
5. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
6. The Avengers (2012)
7. Iron Man 3 (2013)
8. Thor: The Dark World (2013)
9. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
10. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (2017)
11. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
12. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
13. Ant-Man (2015)
14. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
15. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
16. Black Panther (2018)
17. Doctor Strange (2016)
18. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
19. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
20. Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
21. Captain Marvel (2019)
22. Avengers: Endgame (2019)
23. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

What is the best order to watch the Marvel movies?

There is no right or wrong way. The choice is completely yours. But for a Marvel newcomer, viewing the films chronologically would not be the best option, because it may be complicated to remember the background of certain characters. Captain Marvel, for instance, will be introduced in the second film in the list only to next be mentioned over 40 screen hours later.

The opposite might also happen, where the user spends too much time with other superheroes. Tony Stark is a good example: his character arc can feel rushed if you watch Iron Man and Iron Man 2 back to back.

Marvel-lous highlights

Here is a selection of some highlighted Marvel movies and their main characters:

Iron Man (2008)

It's all about genius-inventor-philanthropist Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr. He is captured by a terrorist organization, the leader of which wants the latest weapons system designed by Stark. But Stark designs the first Iron Man suit...

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

After years orchestrating things from to find the Infinity Stones, Thanos (voiced by Josh Brolin) decides to go get them himself, but in his way he finds the Avengers. Thanos’ reason for seeking the power of the stones is to wipe out half of all life in the universe.

Captain Marvel (2019)

In this movie the main character is Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson, who begins a hunt for the shape-shifting Skrull aliens. There’s as much action here as there is nostalgia, especially if you're a 90s kid.
