For five glorious years, the Warriors not only dominated the NBA, they ruled the league’s television ratings on the local and national level.
Now, not so much.
Hobbled by injuries to their biggest stars — Steph Curry and Klay Thompson — and sadddled with the NBA’s worst record (12-43), the Warriors are clearly no longer must-see TV. The league has pulled several of the team’s games off the national prime-time schedule and Golden State’s ratings on NBC Sports Bay Area have taken a dramatic plunge.
How dramatic? According to a report released this week by Sports Business Journal, the numbers for Warriors telecasts on the regional cable network are down a stunning 66 percent compared to last season. That’s the second biggest drop-off among NBA teams.
In fact, only the Denver Nuggets had a bigger local ratings decline — 72 percent. But that situation is largely the result of a bitter standoff between the regional network, Altitude TV, and the state’s largest service provider, Comcast, which has left the Nuggets off air to most of Denver television viewers. Unlike the Warriors, the Nuggets are riding high on the court, with the second-best record (38-17) among Western Conference teams.
Meanwhile, in an ongoing story, the NBA’s nationally televised games are also down year-over-year. A separate Sports Business Journal report found that TV ratings are down 10 percent on ESPN, 13 percent on TNT and 16 percent on ABC.
Theories for the decline are numerous and varied, with analysts pointing to injuries among big-name stars, the increasing use of of “load management” (resting players for certain games days), the Hong Kong-China controversy that ignited in the preseason and cord-cutting among younger fans.
