Martin Scorsese addresses Quentin Tarantino's plan to retire from directing after making only 10 movies. Scorsese and Tarantino are two of the greatest living filmmakers and most important voices in modern cinema, having directed iconic works such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Inglourious Basterds. While Tarantino plans to retire from directing in his early 60s after his tenth film, The Movie Critic, Scorsese is still going strong at 80 years old with another masterpiece, Killers of the Flower Moon, releasing in theaters on October 20.
In an interview with the Associated Press ahead of Killers of the Flower Moon's release date, Scorsese was asked about Tarantino's plan to retire from directing after 10 movies. Scorsese thinks his and Tarantino's situations are completely different since the latter writes all his own films. Scorsese, who is only credited as a writer on a few films in his oeuvre, focuses more on directing, and as long as he is curious about certain subjects, he will keep making movies about them. Read Scorsese's full comments or watch the video of the interview below:
He's a writer. It's a different thing. I come up with stories. I get attracted to stories through other people. All different means, different ways. And so I think it's a different process. I respect writers and I wish I could. I wish I could just be in a room and create these novels, not films, novels.
I'm curious about everything still. That's one of the things. If I'm curious about something I think I'll find a way. If I hold out and hold up, I'll find a way to try to make something of it on film, but I have to be curious about the subject. My curiosity is still there. I couldn't speak for Quentin Tarantino or others who are able to create this work in their world.
Martin Scorsese & Quentin Tarantino's Filmmaking Futures Explained
In another recent interview, Scorsese struck a sobering tone when asked about the future of his filmmaking career. He quoted Kurosawa, saying that, at 80 years old, he is "only now beginning to see the possibility of what cinema could be, and "it’s too late" to tell all the stories he wants to tell. After Killers of the Flower Moon, Scorsese plans to move on to his next project with little rest, which is yet another collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio and another adaptation of a David Grann book, The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder.
While Martin Scorsese fears he's running out of time, Tarantino plans to retire early in his prime after making only 10 movies. The 60-year-old filmmaker has expressed interest in "going out on top" and doesn't want to risk tarnishing his legacy or filmography by "working to diminishing returns." Quentin Tarantino's tenth and final film, The Movie Critic, which is well in the works, will follow an unknown male movie reviewer set in 1977 California. The project was previously planning to begin filming in the fall of 2023, though those plans have seemingly been scrapped due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
