It feels like barely a week passes these days without another new streaming service coming along hoping to persuade us to add yet another subscription to our already wallet-draining portfolio. So it comes as a genuinely pleasant surprise to find Google TV announcing that it’s introduced a new live TV experience to its smart TV platform that’s designed to help you home in on free rather than subscription content.
With so much paid for content out there, and so many different apps and services to pick your way through, you might be surprised to know that there are actually still hundreds of free TV channels available in the online world. In fact, by trawling the likes of Tubi, Plex and Haystack News, and adding their free TV content to the existing free TV channel line up already compiled on Pluto TV, Google TV’s new live tv guide has managed to bring together more than 800 different free TV channels for you to explore within a single dedicated menu area. In fact, Google maintains that the Live TV tab in Google TV brings together more free TV channels in one place/one electronic programming guide (EPG) than you can find on any other smart TV platform.
The new live TV guide part of Google TV launched on April 11, and includes among its new free TV compilation such channels as NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX, and shows as popular and well regarded as Westworld, Low & Order: Special Victims Unit and The Walking Dead. In fact, as you might expect with 800+ channels to go at, the new live TV section gives you easy access to free movie and TV show content covering everything from news to blockbuster films, as well as content available in more than 10 languages, including Japanese, Hindi and Spanish.
The new Live TV guide doesn’t stop at just compiling all the free TV channels in one place, either. It can organise them via genre - in true crime, classic TV reruns, cooking shows and so on - and lets you select your favourite channels so that they appear at the top of the massive channel list. You can search for specific things, or browse recommendations about shows that are currently playing if you’re in the mood for something new.
While the main drive behind the new Google TV live TV tab is to make it easier for you to find free stuff to watch, you can also use it to see live content on YouTube TV or Sling TV - or, actually, any over-the-air channels. Essentially ALL live TV channels are brought together into one place by Google TV’s handy new addition.
The new live TV experience is available on all Google TV devices in the US, including Chromecast with Google TV, and TVs with Google TV built in. Such TVs are available from a wide range of manufacturers, including Sony, TCL, Hisense and Philips. The new TV guide and free channels are also expected to be rolled out to eligible Android TV devices later this year - though Google TV can’t say at this point exactly when that update might appear, or what exactly it means by ‘eligible’ devices.
