War veteran turned filmmaker Elegance Bratton makes his feature film directorial debut with a semi-autobiographical project recounting his experience in Marine boot camp. After years of being homeless due to being disowned by his homophobic mother (Gabrielle Union), Ellis French (Jeremy Pope) enlists in the Marines in an attempt to become a man and strip his gay identity away. To his surprise, what was meant to be self-inflected conversion therapy becomes a more homoerotic experience.
The Whale (December 9)
Based on the stage play by Samuel D. Hunter, The Whale follows Charlie (Brendan Fraser), a 600-pound gay English professor on the brink of death who isolates himself from the world following the loss of his partner. He’s estranged from everyone, including his angsty teenage daughter (Sadie Sink) who wants nothing to do with him. Piecing together Charlie’s past and his tragic present, The Whale is an emotionally riveting movie that focuses on the sacrifices people make to find happiness and the bridges burned along the way.
Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies (December 16)
Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies dramatizes the real-life romance between husbands Michael Ausiello (Jim Parsons) and Kit Cowan (Ben Aldridge) as they grapple with the latter’s imminent death due to terminal cancer. Based on the memoir Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Other Four-Letter Words by Michael Ausiello, the film chronicles the couple’s final year together and the existential whirlwind ride of emotions they face together. Parson hasn’t led a romantic drama nor has he explored tenderness in a role such as this before. With Spoiler Alert, we might get to see a new side of the Big Bang Theory star that could wring out genuine tears from audiences, especially people already familiar with Ausiello and Cowan’s story.
