Huntington Woods native Kristen Bell co-stars with Kirby Howell-Baptiste as a pair of housewives who get away with a $40 million coupon scheme — until it comes to the attention of law enforcement — in “Queenpins.” The creators of this R-rated comedy, Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly, got their start in Grand Rapids television news. It also stars Vince Vaughn and Paul Walter Hauser, and opens Friday in theaters.

• “The Alpinist”: Marc-Andé Leclerc climbs alone, on remote alpine faces. The free-spirited 23-year-old Canadian makes some of the boldest ascents in history with no cameras, no rope and no margin for error. Veteran filmmaker Peter Mortimer sets out to make a film about Leclerc but struggles to keep up with his elusive subject. Then, Leclerc embarks on a historic adventure in Patagonia that will redefine what is possible in solo climbing. Rated PG-13, it’s in theaters.
• “Blood Brothers: Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali”: Documentary tells the story behind the friendship of two of black iconics, premiering Sept. 9 on Netflix.
• “The Card Counter”: Redemption is the long game in Paul Schrader’s revenge thriller, the story of an ex-military interrogator turned gambler haunted by the ghosts of his past decisions. Starring Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan, Willem Dafoe. It’s rated R, in theaters.
• “Come From Away” is an award-winning Broadway musical following the true story of 7,000 people stranded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, after all flights into the United States are grounded on September 11, 2001. As the people of Newfoundland graciously welcome the “come from aways” into their community, the passengers and locals process what’s happened while finding love, laughter and hope in the bonds they forge. The show was filmed at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in New York City for an audience including 9/11 survivors and front-line workers. It premieres worldwide Sept. 10 on Apple TV+.
• “Flowers of Shanghai”: Director Hou Hsiao-hsien’s visually intoxicating period drama (restored, Taiwan 1998) traces the fortunes and intrigues of four “flower girls” serving in the opulent brothels of late 19th-century Shanghai. It’s playing via DFT @ Home through Sept. 25, bit.ly/2X7lEtE.
• “Kate”: An ace assassin who blows an assignment targeting a member of the yakuza in Tokyo is poisoned in retaliation, giving her 24 hours to take revenge on her killers, and form an unlikely bond with the teenage daughter of one of her victims. Rated R, it stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson. Streaming on Netflix.
• “Malignant”: A woman is tormented by shocking vision, and then discovers her waking dreams are realities in this new R-rated horror feature. Starring Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson and George Young. In theaters.
• “Show Me the Father”: This documentary featuring stories interwoven with inspirational truths about fatherhood — and the Heavenly Father — stars Stephen Kendrick, Alex Kendrick, Tony Evans and Eddie George. In theaters.
