The Timber Heritage Association’s speeder crew car program has a new addition — a trolley. It will operate up and down First Street in Old Town Eureka during Arts Alive! starting Saturday and at the Friday Night Market beginning Aug. 6. Rides will be offered from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
The trolley was originally constructed for the Netflix show “A Series of Unfortunate Events” (2017-2019). The Eureka Lodging Alliance purchased it for the Timber Heritage Association from a Canadian rail group.
“Some THA volunteers, including myself, had approached the Eureka Lodging Alliance about purchasing the trolley. We had seen it advertised and thought it would be an asset to Eureka tourism,” said Bruce Seivertson, the association’s community outreach liaison. “The Lodging Alliance agreed, and that set the wheels into motion. Of course, the ELA has been instrumental in other tourist attractions, including the new zoo Redwood Sky Walk.”
Timber Heritage Association volunteers picked the trolley up in Canada during a major snowstorm, then trailered it to the Samoa Shops.
“I was one of the volunteers on the trolley trip,” Seivertson said. “You might recall the horrendous snowstorm that shut down much of Seattle and Portland in February of 2019. Well, three of us were in it and headed to Canada. … The great thing about the storm was that there was virtually no traffic on I-5 in either Seattle or Portland, so we sailed along.”
Volunteers have spent the last two years rebuilding the trolley and getting it up and running while the shops were closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Getting the trolley to a fully operational mode was definitely a challenge, even for the talented THA volunteers,” Seivertson said. “Bernie Christen headed up the project and he literally started from scratch. The trolley, as it appeared in the movie, did not have a drive system, so he had to design and build it. The actual trolley chassis is from a crew-car speeder, so that part Bernie understood, the rest was often trial and error. In the end it is finished and functions well. Having operated it, I can assure you that all the THA volunteers involved are thrilled.”
Because of government restrictions on public transportation, masks will be required for all trolley riders. If you forget yours, Timber Heritage Association volunteers will be happy to give you one. The fare is a $5 cash donation for all riders, except for small children riding on an adult’s lap. Unlike the popular San Francisco cable cars, all riders must remain seated.
