TV and streaming picks for Sunday, April 4
WATCH THIS:
“27th Annual Screen Actors Awards” (6 p.m. PT; 9 p.m. ET; TNT & TBS): Considering the wretched ratings for awards shows lately, the folks behind this trophy-fest were probably wise to go with a short (one hour), host-less, pre-taped ceremony this year. Still, we’ll be looking for hints as to which way the Oscar winds might be blowing.
“Malika the Lion Queen” (8 p.m., Fox): Narrated by Angela Bassett, this new wildlife special follows a powerful pride of lions in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Exploring the exhilarating and harrowing life of lioness Malika, the special takes viewers on an educational exploration about the true queens and leaders in the lion kingdom.
“My Grandparents’ War” (8 p.m., PBS): Combining key moments in history with compelling personal stories, this new four-part series takes a fascinating journey into the past to understand the extraordinary impact of World War II on the families of four British actors. Helena Bonham Carter, Mark Rylance, Kristin Scott Thomas and Carey Mulligan each host a one-hour journey into their respective family histories as they travel to historic locations, from the beaches of Dunkirk to the former site of a prisoner-of-war camp in Hong Kong, to retrace their grandparents’ footsteps during the conflict that changed their lives forever.
“The Walking Dead” (9 p.m., AMC): The Season 10 finale — “Here’s Negan” — is all about the guy who first appeared in the series as a murderous, bat-wielding mad man played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. With Maggie back at Alexandria, Carol takes Negan on a journey to minimize the increasing tension. There, Negan reflects, via flashbacks, on his late wife Lucille (Morgan’s real-life spouse, Hilarie Burton) and the events that led him to this point.
“Atlantic Crossing” (9 p.m., PBS): A princess steals the heart of the president of the United States in this epic, eight-part “Masterpiece” drama based on the World War II relationship of Franklin Roosevelt and Norwegian Crown Princess Martha. Kyle MacLachlan stars as Roosevelt, opposite Swedish star Sofia Helin as the beautiful Martha, who flees the Nazis with her three young children and lives under Roosevelt’s protection.
“How It Really Happened with Hill Harper” (9 p.m., HLN): The latest installment of this series recalls the life and death of Eagles’ co-founder, guitarist, and songwriter Glenn Frey. On stage fans always saw a fun-loving Glenn Frey but behind the scenes he had been dealing with a number of health issues. And, ultimately, when he died in 2016 his fans were shocked because he was still playing the music they loved.
“Gangs of London” (10:14 p.m., AMC): In this British thriller, the underworld erupts in chaos when London crime boss Finn Wallace (Colm Meaney) is killed and nobody knows who ordered the hit. With rivals everywhere, it’s up to the impulsive Sean Wallace (Joe Cole), with the help of the Dumani family, to take his father’s place. If the situation wasn’t already dangerous enough, Sean’s assumption of power causes ripples in the world of international crime.his impulsive son (Joe Cole) seeks vengeance. Let the turbulent power plays begin.
“Birdgirl” (Midnight, Adult Swim): It’s a bird … It’s a girl … It’s just Birdgirl! This new half-hour animated comedy series, a pin-off from “Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law,” focuses on the title character (voiced by Paget Brewster) and her misfit crime-fighting clan. Together, Judy Ken Sebben and her Birdteam try to undo all the luridly dangerous decisions of the generation before.
