1. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (New in August) — Jim Carrey gives perhaps his finest performance in this beautiful, heartbreaking twist on the romantic comedy. 2. BEING JOHN MALKOVICH (New in July) — Strange, unsettling, and unforgettable, from the Brothers Kaufman. 3. JURASSIC PARK (New in July) — The franchise may not have aged well, but the Spielberg original is still a perfect piece of pop cinema. 4. MAD MAX (1979) (New in July) — The Aussie original may not have the bombast of FURY ROAD, but it's still a spectacular piece of post-apocalyptic filmmaking. 5. THE NEVERENDING STORY (New in July) — Dial this one up from your childhood and enjoy. 6. OCEAN'S TWELVE (New in July) — This film was widely panned when it came out, but it's aged perhaps even better than the other Ocean films. If you didn't love it the first time around, give it another chance. 7. OCEAN'S THIRTEEN (New in July) — This film sticks more closely to the original Ocean's 11 formula, and features Al Pacino having the time of his life. 8. DONNIE BRASCO — Speaking of Al Pacino, he's strong alongside Johnny Depp in this gangster flick. 9. FRIDA — Salma Hayek is stunning in this film about the great artist. 10. MILLION DOLLAR BABY — Clint Eastwood stars and directs in this boxing film, featuring Hillary Swank. 11. SCHINDLER'S LIST — One of Steven Spielberg's masterpieces, which tells a chilling story of the Holocaust and one man who tried to do his part to fight back. 12. SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE — Nora Ephron's finest film, with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. 13. SPACEBALLS — Mel Brooks' send-up of the Star Wars films is idiotic and flawless. 14. STAND AND DELIVER — Edward James Olmos is his defining role as an inner-city teacher. 15. THE SOCIAL NETWORK — Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher joined forces for this powerful look at Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. 16. THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE — Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino elevate an admittedly silly premise, one that makes for a fun ride. 17. THE FIRM — Tom Cruise is predictably charming in this legal thriller. 18. THE KARATE KID — It's a classic for a reason. 19. CLUELESS — One of the great comedies of the last few decades, with Shakespearean source material and a perfect performance from Alicia Silverstone. 20. THE HELP — Octavia Spencer is strong in this movie on race relations in the deep South. 21. INSIDE MAN — Spike Lee's heist caper is delicious, with Clive Owen and Denzel Washington. 22. THE QUEEN — Dame Helen Mirren can play this role backwards and forwards, as she does here. 23. WALK HARD — The Dewey Cox story is a spoof of the musical biopic and actually might be the best musical biopic ever made. 24. LADY BIRD — A charming look at a young girl making it work in Sacramento, from Greta Gerwig. 25. THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS — Perhaps the finest thriller ever made, with the role of a lifetime from Anthony Hopkins. 26. FROST / NIXON — A historical film that keeps its focus razor sharp — one interview — and delivers because of it. 27. TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY — The plot may be a bit weedsy but the performances are fantastic in this spy thriller. 28. SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE — A perfect bit of comic book moviemaking. I'll take this over any of the mega Marvel movies that came out recently. 29. THE TOWN — Ben Affleck shows off his directing chops in this heist film. 30. THE LOBSTER — At turns strange, funny, and unforgettable, this movie is a bit of a rom com, bit of a dystopian hellscape picture. 31. MUD — One of the most underrated films in recent memory, with a perfect acting job from Matthew McConaughy. 32. DRIVE — Ryan Gosling's spare performance is what keeps this ultra-stylish crime film going. 33. STEVE JOBS — An unflinching look at the tortured, problematic genius behind Apple. 34. MOLLY'S GAME — Jessica Chastain has a blast in this film about a high stakes poker game and the woman who ran it. 35. EXTRACTION — Want to see Chris Hemsworth blow stuff up? In this movie, you get to see Chris Hemsworth blow all of the things up. 36. UNITED 93 — An honest, gripping look at the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001. 37. THE LINCOLN LAWYER — It's a standard legal thriller with a twist or two, but an enjoyable movie of the kind that they don't make much of these days. No superheroes, no explosions … just a courtroom and a great performance from Matthew McConaughy. 38. UNCUT GEMS — Adam Sandler gives his finest performance in this stressful, tense look at a jeweler in NYC. 39. DISTRICT 9 — A well-made sci-fi flick that explores the double meaning of the word, "alien." 40. THE PATRIOT — Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger are two Aussies who star as Americans in this Revolutionary War picture. 41. BLUE RUIN — One of the most jolting, brilliant bits of filmmaking you'll see. A bloody retribution picture with a sweet-faced protagonist, and a twist or two along the way. 42. ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE — Jim Carrey dials it up past 11 to about 17 in this ridiculous, hilarious comedy. 43. DOLEMITE IS MY NAME — Eddie Murphy returns to the screen and shines in this period comedy / drama. 44. EX MACHINA — Oscar Issac is haunting in this brilliant sci-fi movie directed by Alex Garland. 45. GROUNDHOG DAY — Quite simply one of the best movies ever made, with Bill Murray living one day over and over again, to incredible effect. 46. THE FLORIDA PROJECT — Willem Dafoe is charming in this movie about life in poverty in a shopping center in Florida. 47-49: THE INDIANA JONES TRILOGY — It doesn't get much better than this. The fourth one, with Shia LaBeouf, is also on there, but we're not including it in this list. 50. INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS — Quentin Tarantino's fantastical WWII film has moments of true genius, and clear vision. 51. THE IRISHMAN — Martin Scorcese goes to a mob story again, and once again delivers the goods. 52. JERRY MAGUIRE — Tom Cruise gives a perfect, over-the-top performance as a sports agent in this romantic comedy. 53. MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL — Simply one of the funniest, most quotable movies ever made. 54. HER — Eerie, futuristic, heartfelt, and sad, this romantic comedy imagines if one of the main characters wasn't, in fact, a human being. 55. MOONLIGHT — Barry Jenkins' masterpiece won Best Picture, for this incredible coming-of-age story. 56. OKJA — Bong Joon-ho directs this allegorical picture, which doesn't let its message get in the way of an excellent, fun film. 57. SNOWPIERCER — Another film from Bong Joon-ho, another movie with a clear message, another movie that also manages to dazzle throughout. 58. ZODIAC — David Fincher's spare, brilliant look at two men trying to track down a serial killer. With Robert Downey Jr. and Jake Gyllenhall. 59. SENNA — A wonderful documentary about the great F1 driver who met a tragic end. 61.
