There are so many amazing children’s novels out there that have been passed down from generation to generation for all kids to enjoy – and some of which have also had the chance to be adapted into great movies as well. Some have gone on to win Academy Awards®. Others have even had sequels that have been even better than the first film.
There are some great movies based on children’s books out there that you should check out, from movies that were released in the early 2000s to some that have come out in the last decade. Here are four examples – plus a few others you should check out down below.
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Starting off this list strong, FANTASTIC MR. FOX released in 2009 and was directed by Academy Award® winner Wes Anderson. The movie was based on the novel by Roald Dahl from 1970, and starred several big names including George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe and others. But what makes FANTASTIC MR. FOX such a great movie is that anyone can enjoy it.
This stop-motion animated flick could be the favorite movie of a child, a teenager, or even an adult, because there is truly something to love for every age-range, no matter how old you are. Wes Anderson has a way with his stop-motion films in his signature style and he is able to make a movie that is truly re-watchable. And with the humor that the original novel brings to the movie, you have a winner overall. FANTASTIC MR. FOX really is one of the best movies based on a children’s book out there. It even received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature (and Best Original Score).
Dr. Seuss' The Lorax
Next up, you should check out the movie adaptation of THE LORAX, otherwise known as DR. SEUSS’ THE LORAX. The film follows a young boy who is on the lookout for the last real tree in existence, taking him all the way to the keeper of the forest, a creature called the Lorax.
DR. SEUSS’ THE LORAX is a great adaptation for many reasons, one of which is some of the stellar picks for its voice cast – specifically Danny DeVito as The Lorax and Ed Helms as the Once-ler, the two main characters from the original novel that were featured in the film. Another reason is that it has a lot of great music, and impressive animation. However, what really makes DR. SEUSS’ THE LORAX such a great film is that it teaches a valuable lesson about the environment, and how humans need to treat it with kindness and respect rather than a business model.
Shrek
Everyone knows SHREK! The Dreamworks franchise started off strong in 2001, telling the story of an Ogre who is forced to deliver a princess to a king in order to regain his swamp from fairytale creatures, and along the way, finds love.
SHREK is arguably one of the best movies based on a children’s book, as it was based on the 1990 book of the same name by William Steig. The movie itself has a fun fairytale story that any child will enjoy from beginning to end, but for parents, there is plenty of great humor, from adult jokes that only you’ll get, to funny moments that will make the whole family laugh.
The movie was so popular, it spawned three sequels, and won the first ever award for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.
Paddington

These films were made to pull at your heartstrings, from the moment you start watching them. Paddington is beloved by children all over the world and fans agree that the films did not disappoint, giving an accurate depiction of everyone’s favorite bear, from the marmalade sandwiches to how kind he truly is to everyone, and the lessons he teaches are valuable to all.
