The spookiest time of the year is creeping up once again, coinciding with chillier evenings and a desire to dust out the fireplace, grab a warm drink, and flick on a scary movie. While you’re deciding which pulse-raising form of entertainment to consume, remember: the eeriest stories are the ones that feel real.

So with that, here are some thrillers that were filmed in the Hudson Valley. Watch if you dare!

‘A Quiet Place’ and ‘A Quiet Place Part II’

Dutchess, Ulster and Herkimer counties

This horror drama duology lauded for its unnervingly quiet setting is spattered with scenes that take place across the Hudson Valley. Filmed in locations including the Springtown Truss Bridge on the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail, the towns of Pawling and Beacon in Dutchess County, and Main Street in Little Falls, those familiar with local landscapes may find that this movie’s backdrop hits close to home.

Based on the premise that a family living in a post-apocalyptic world is being hunted by creatures that prey by sound, it’s a good thing the script is sparing. The family, acted by John Krasinski (also the film’s director), Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe, resides in a farmhouse in Pawling at 623 W Dover Road.

‘What Breaks the Ice’

Putnam and Dutchess counties

When an innocent coming-of-age story takes a morbid twist, the blossoming friendship of two teenage girls attempts to navigate the spine-chilling story of a mysterious murder. Set in a small New England town in 1998 but filmed primarily in Cold Spring and Beacon, the setting primes the audience for a nostalgic viewing experience. The pre-social media age paints a simple and wholesome backdrop for this friendship, a sharp contrast from the bedlam the girls come to endure.

‘Slapface’

Orange County

Filmed at Umbra Sound Stages in Newburgh and other locations throughout the Hudson Valley, watching this 2021 indie horror film will without doubt raise the spooky thermometer in your home. And after the final credits, head over to the Golden Rail Ale House in Newburgh to see where some of these startling scenes came to life.

Written and directed by Jeremiah Kipp, the main character, Lucas, played by August Maturo, copes with the recent loss of his mother. Lucas and his brother, left alone to fend for themselves in a house in the woods, must work to rebuild their lives. In doing so, Lucas forges a dubious relationship with a monster in the woods … an idea that tends not to end up well in scary movies.

‘Things Heard and Seen’

Dutchess County

More than simply being filmed in the Hudson Valley, several cast members from this 2021 psychological thriller are also residents of the area. Stars Amanda Seyfried, Karen Allen and Michael O'Keefe all live locally, as do the directors, Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini. The Hudson River, the red church in Tivoli and the Red Hook library are featured throughout the film.

Set in 1980 in the fictional town of Chosen, this Netflix film’s storyline is loosely based on a true story, with two degrees of separation between it and the real 1982 homicide. A real case of a Brighton, New York woman being found murdered in her bed with an axe in her head was the premise for a novel, “All Things Cease to Appear,” written by Albany resident Elizabeth Brundage, which “Things Heard and Seen” is based on.
