The second season of The Young Pope – renamed The New Pope – is premiering tonight, Monday, Jan. 13, on HBO at 9 p.m. EST. This is the beginning of a nine-episode season that picks up where The Young Pope left off. Pope Pius XIII (Jude Law) has a spiritual awakening as he collapses in the season one finale, and at the beginning of season two, he’s in a coma.

The American Pope has had several failed heart transplants and his supporters stand vigil outside of the hospital. Meanwhile, Sir John Brannox (John Malkovich) has been chosen as The New Pope, hence the show’s title change. Brannox chooses the name John Paul III. He butts heads with the clever Cardinal Voiello (Silvio Orlando) who does everything in his power to protect his church from scandal, scrutiny and certain popes.
