The seventh Democratic debate between candidates vying for the presidential nomination takes place Tuesday in Iowa, and this time, viewers will see a much narrower field. The candidates who qualified for the Iowa debate, sponsored by CNN and the Des Moines Register, are Joe Biden, former vice president; Pete Buttigieg, former mayor of South Bend, Indiana; Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar; Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders; billionaire Tom Steyer; and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren.
Though there’s never a boring day when it comes to politics in our current moment, this Iowa debate is happening at an especially volatile time. As CNN points out, the debate coincides with impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, the ongoing story of unrest in the Middle East and U.S. involvement in that part of the world, and reports of conflict between Sanders and Warren as their campaigns compete for the progressive vote.
(How to stream online: The debate will stream live on CNN.com, without requiring log-in to a cable provider homepage, and across mobile devices via CNN’s apps for iOS and Android, and via CNNgo apps for Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire, Chromecast and Android TV. The debate will also air live at DesMoinesRegister.com and Democrats.org, and you can also stream it on fuboTV.)
The smallest-ever field of candidates has also been encountering criticism because of its all-white lineup, which seems contrary to the Democratic Party’s message of the importance of diversity.
Among those who will be absent from the debate stage, for example, are such former candidates as New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, California Senator Kamala Harris, and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro, who have all dropped out of the race. Entrepreneur Andrew Yang is still in the race, but he failed to meet the fundraising and polling requirements mandated by the Democratic National Committee.
The debate will be held at Drake University, in Des Moines, Iowa, and will be moderated by Wolf Blitzer and Abby Phillip, of CNN, and Brianne Pfannenstiel, the chief politics reporter for the Des Moines Register.
